THE most up to date coronavirus rates across Essex have been revealed in new figures.

In the weekly update issued by Essex County Council, Basildon's rate continues to rise and is now the highest in the council area. 

Indeed it is Basildon's rate - alongside Castle Point and Brentwood - which has contributed to a continuing rise in the overall rate across th county, which has risen from 141.2 new cases per 100,000 of population to 151.7 in the latest seven day period.

Yesterday, Essex was placed into Tier 2 of the latest coronavirus restrictions from December 2.

That means mixing households indoors continues to be banned and pubs which do not serve "substantial" meals cannot yet open.

Southend gathers data differently but the rate there as of yesterday was 133.2.
