A POLICE officer was attacked during a late night patrol in Benfleet.

While out on Operation Weaver on Friday night, the Essex Police Castle Point team came across two men sat in a car.

Officers decided to check who they were, but say unfortunately the driver did not want to be searched and that the incident ended in a brief struggle.

A 24-year-old from Benfleet was arrested on suspicion of obstructing a constable, assault on a police constable, and possession of an offensive weapon - a knuckle duster.

The male was also arrested on suspicion of possession with intent to supply and in charge of a vehicle whilst unfit through drugs.

And during the chaos, another 24-year-old male was also arrested on suspicion of possession with intent to supply.

A spokesperson from Essex Police, said: "Both have been interviewed and remain under investigation whilst we collate further evidence."
