CANVEY Island are one of just two Essex football clubs still in the FA Cup as the competition heads into the second round.

The Gulls’ spectacular run continued thanks to a win over Banbury United at the weekend and they will now face Boreham Wood, who overcame Southend United following a penalty shoot-out win, in the second round.

Canvey, who are managed by former Shrimpers midfielder Mark Bentley, are the lowest-ranking side still remaining in the FA Cup this season and it is the first time they have reached this stage since 2001.

On that occasion, the Gulls – managed by club legend Jeff King – continued their giant-killing run after they dumped Second Division side Northampton Town out of the FA Cup at Park Lane.

Striker Neil Gregory was once again the Isthmian Premier League side’s hero when he fired past Northampton goalkeeper Keith Welch in the 48th minute.

Gregory, who scored his side’s late winner in the 1-0 victory over Wigan Athletic in round one, rounded off a superb move instigated by former West Ham United and Liverpool full-back Julian Dicks.

The goal and final whistle sparked wild scenes on and off the pitch, with the Gulls reaching the third round of the oldest national football competition in the world for the first time in their history.

Canvey made the trip to Burnley – who now compete in the Premier League – looking to cause another upset.

However, it proved to be a step too far for the south Essex outfit as they suffered a 4-1 defeat at Turf Moor.

An Ian Moore hat-trick, along with a Glen Little effort, resulted in Lee Boylan’s goal being no more than a consolation for the non-league side.

Along with Dagenham & Redbridge, Canvey are Essex’s only hope of having a club in the third round of the competition this term.

Canvey will be hoping to have more to celebrate against Boreham Wood later this month.
