TRIBUTES have been paid to a former boxer from Corringham who has sadly died.

Alan Sams, 58, spent his childhood in the village where he was well-known for being a boxer for the Shell Club, now known as The Springhouse Social Club.

At the time of his death, Mr Sams lived in Perth, Scotland where he ran a cafe.

Sadly, on October 15, he suffered a heart attack while in a bar and despite efforts from members of staff he passed away shortly after.

Mr Sams had lived in Corringham up until his late teens, before travelling Europe and setting up coffee shops in Amsterdam and Berlin, before set, tling in Perth, where he lived for the past 12 years.

Mr Sams’ sister, Tina Southern, who lives in Corringham, has paid tribute to her beloved brother.

The 55-year-old said: “He was known as ‘Big Al’, he was an amazing man, the kids called him uncle Shrek because he was a big, loveable, kind-hearted man.

“He met a girl and decided to stay up there, he loves nature, he loved being in that area.

“It was such a beautiful place to live.

“He set up a coffee shop and just went from there.

“He didn’t have anything, he would give it all to you.”

Mr Sams would open his coffee shop on Christmas Day for anyone who was alone, without company, a home or dinner.

He is survived by Ms Southern plus two other brothers, three children, two nephews and one niece.

Mr Sams’ body has been flown back to Essex.

This followed a successful fundraiser to pay for the flight. His funeral will be held on Monday, November 9.

Ms Southern added: “He was the only person in my life that has been there for me my whole life.

“I can’t even describe it, he was a lovely human being.

“He was rough around the edges and had a colourful life, but had a big massive heart.”

The funeral will be held at Corbets Tey in Upminster.

While only a certain amount can attend, people are welcome to join outside the venue by social distancing to pay their respects to Mr Sams.
