This week’s Down Memory Lane from the Thurrock Library archive looks at the History of Argent Street in Grays.

Did you know that Argent Street in Grays is named after Mr Jesse Argent, a local lighterman.

Mr Argent also kept one of the first Sub-Post Offices in Grays. (Information sourced from local history notes by F.Z Claro held by Grays Library).

The Castle Public House stood in Argent Street, opposite Trafalgar Square and further down the street was the Echoes, built around 1869 and demolished 1966. In reference to the article on Mucking I have since been informed that Crown House still exists.
