NEW coronavirus restrictions won't be coming into affect until "next week or the week after", according to council bosses.

Essex County Council's bid to move the region into Tier 2 of the Government's system will see tougher restrictions in place, but this won't put into action until next week at the earliest, the leader of Basildon Council, Gavin Callaghan, revealed last night.

Mr Callaghan, in a live stream to residents, insisted the move from County Hall is the right one with cases and hospital admissions rising.

But the leader has said the live stream was "sabotaged by an outside conspiracy group who planned to fill the comment section with their distorted lies and weird opinions."

He said: "I see there’s a few villages missing their idiots. Sorry to Basildon people who read upsetting comments."

In the live stream, the leader said young people have now passed coronavirus onto older people across the county.

Mr Callaghan added: "It is not likely that any restriction will come into affect until next week or early the week after if they were accepted.

"I don't want to put restrictions on anyone but we simply will not be able to cope with the rise in cases if we don't get on top of this.

"We're not a million miles off being in a position where we are stretched again."
