This week’s Down Memory Lane visits Orsett.
The photo, taken in the 1960s, shows as small wooden building on the corner of Pound Lane. The building is the Village lock-up, its barred windows long since boarded up. It was built in the 1700s as a prison, it was last used for this purpose in 1848.
It later became a hen house and was erected on its present site in 1938 Down Memory Lane is written by Andrew Burt, Librarian and Local Studies Officer.
