A TORY council leader has announced he is stepping down from the role, amid claims of what he called bullying and interfering and control from "people who should know better".

Speaking at a council meeting tonight, Tory councillor Mike Steptoe announced his decision to quit as council leader.

He issued "caution" for the new adminstration - still the Conservatives - and hoped it finds a way to deal with bullying, interference and control from people who should know better and will seek to influence matters.”

He said: "I’m of course disappointed I’m not continuing as leader. Who would have thought back in January and February about the challenges we were about to face. I would like to thank the officers and I am sure members will agree without them we would have been very lacking.

“I would like to finish with a word of caution for the incoming administration, to make sure you look after officers and staff, you will have to go far to find better and I hope they find a way to deal with bullying, interference and control from people who should know better and will seek to influence matters.”

Following a motion from the Tories and a vote by members Simon Wootton was voted in as the new leader of the council.

Mr Wootton said: “Thanks member for your support, it’s an honour and privilege to be the new leader of the district council. You have assurance I will give the role my full commitment I and my administration will do our very in the interests of residents.”
