WILLIAM Edwards School and Sports College held its annual presentation evening recently. With the students producing the school's best ever results, it was particularly fitting that the guest of honour was former British and European champion John Salisbury.

He was a brilliant athlete in the great amateur tradition.

A superb Olympian, who mainly competed in 400m, he took a bronze medal in the 1956 Melbourne Olympics with team mates Francis Higgins, Michael Wheeler and Derek Johnson.

Headmaster John King, made his annual address in front of 500 people. He explained how this had been the most successful year in the school's history with 65 per cent gaining five or more A* - C grades at G.C.S.E. Jacob Smith was awarded the Academic Shield for gaining 12 G.C.S.E's at A*.

Guests were entertained by Kerri Knight, Karen Gomwe and Danny White of Year 11 before Lucy Hatton brought a close to proceedings with her dulcet tones.

A new award this year was The Leadership Award presented by the Headmaster Mr John King, O.B.E. to Thomas Hughes, former Head Boy.

Other major awards were: The Doust Trophy and The Measures Cup for Sport awarded to Joe Pavitt.

The Charles Babbage Cup for ICT and The Henderson Academic Shield awarded to Jacob Smith.

The Fryer Award for Special Endeavours to Alfred Jarrett.

The Masuda Trophy for International Relationships was awarded to Chantelle Currie.

The Weston Trophy was shared between Tara Swain and Zoe Hollington.

The Community Service Award to Rhys Battye.

The Saxton Memorial Award and Musician of the Year awarded to Lucy Hatton.
