A BRAZEN thug broke into a disabled woman’s home and stole a laptop while she and her carer looked on in horror.

Wayne Kavanagh was jailed for another 14 months for burglary after ransacking a home in Southend last year.

The 29-year-old has previously been convicted for a host of vile crimes, including a stand off with police where he claimed he had a bomb, and sending threatening messages to people while in prison.

In this latest offence, Kavanagh, formerly of Derek Gardens, Southend, had gone with another person to the home of someone he knew in Canterbury Avenue on September 25 last year.

One of the residents was a lady who was immobile following brain damage brought on by a previous heart attack. She lived there with a carer.

Once Kavanagh was inside he began shouting, demanding to know if there was any money, then pulled open drawers looking for valuables, continuing to shout throughout.

He managed to steal a silver laptop and bag before he and his accomplice fled.

The incident took around ten minutes, but Kavanagh had entered the home at half past midnight, meaning residents would have been asleep.

Kavanagh appeared via video link at Basildon Crown Court yesterday and admitted one count of burglary.

He was previously jailed on November 12 for the ten-hour stand off with police in Sherwood Way, Southend on September 30, after falsely claiming he had a bomb.

Between October last year and May this year Kavanagh had, on three separate occasions, been found with a mobile phone in prison where he had sent abusive texts and a threat to three people.

Mitigating, Charles Langley said: “He knows now that he is nearly 30, it’s far too told to be dealing with crime and is looking to make a clean start.

“He has had no visitors for a while now and that is affecting his mental health.”

Judge Andrew Hurst told Kavanagh: “It seems during your remand in custody you have recognised there are a number of issues in your behaviour to address.

“You appreciate you have responsibilities for your son, and that you’re failing those if you remain in prison.”
