Colchester's recycling centre was forced to close early after reports of traffic problems caused by people queuing to get into the tip.

It comes just two weeks after the centre reopened with social distancing measures in place.

Residents have been flocking to Shrub End Recycling Centre sparking concerns.

In a Tweet Love Essex, responsible for promoting County Hall's waste centres, said: "Colchester Recycling Centre at Shrub End is now closed for the rest of the day.

"Please check the Love Essex website before travelling tomorrow.

"We will keep you updated. Please only visit a recycling centre if absolutely necessary."

In a separate tweet to members of the public Essex County Council said: "Police have instructed us to close the site because of traffic congestion caused by excessive queuing traffic outside site."

The tip reopened on May 18 with restrictions and social distancing controls in place to ensure the safety of staff and users.
