A man is gearing up to run a marathon around his village green to show his thanks to the NHS who are working tirelessly during the coronavirus pandemic.

Adam Coope, 37, from Upper Heyford, will run roughly 114 laps to reach 26.2 miles.

He will be taking on the endurance challenge by himself to adhere to the current social distancing regulations and hopes people will sponsor him and raise money for NHS Charities Together.

He said: “I was planning on running a marathon in Milton Keynes, but it got cancelled. However I wanted to raise money for the NHS so I looked into what charity was best the option and chose this one.

“It helps staff on the frontline not just for their scrubs but for things like hot food for their families.

"As I’ve been working from my home office, I looked at the village green outside my house and thought I’d give it a go.”

Mr Coope, who works for Alistair Redhouse Estate Agents based in Kidlington, reckons it will take him around 3-4 hours to run the laps and his family will cheer him on, with his wife planning to film it on Facebook Live for people to watch from home.

He added: “I did think I could do it around my drive way but that’s really small, would take me all day and I'd probably get dizzy.

“I was concerned at first about doing it on the green because it’s a public place, so I put a post in the Heyford Facebook community page and I got nothing but positive responses from people saying it’s a great idea.”

People will be watching Mr Coope run from their windows and his wife will keep him hydrated with water, lap after lap.

His marathon is on Sunday, April 26 at 08:30 am and is expected to finish at around 12pm.

This is his first fundraiser and he wants to raise £1,000 for the charity and so far, £200 has been donated.

Many marathons due to take place around the world, including the London Marathon, have been postponed this year due to the coronavirus.

Mr Coope is not the only one running their own solo marathon at home.

Ex-athlete, James Campbell, 31, from Cheltenham, ran round his 19ft back garden 7,000 times on his birthday on Thursday.

The challenge took around seven hours to complete and he hoped to raise £10,000 for NHS Charities Together as well.

The run was streamed online for the public to watch and as of yesterday, people had donated £27,416.00 to the cause.
