A BASILDON man has been left stranded in Cyprus "without money, food or water" after his flights were cancelled.

The Echo previously reported that Jonty Edmondson, 20, had been stuck in Cyprus after all flights back to the UK were cancelled because of coronavirus concerns.

The UK Foreign Office were contacted and were able to be put in touch with Mr Edmondson, and he was due to fly home from Ercan Airport via Istanbul, Turkery yesterday.

However, his flight was cancelled at the last minute.

Mr Edmondson said: "My flight from Istanbul to London has been cancelled.

"Because of this I can’t fly from North Cyprus to Istanbul because the Turkish government won’t allow U.K. citizens in.

"All the hotels are shut, everything is shut."

Mr Edmondson travelled to Paphos Airport in South Cyprus where he is now stranded, with no flights being available.

Echo:

Mr Edmondson is alone at the airport

He said: "I can’t get hold of the foreign office either

"I’ve followed everything the FCO [Foreign and Commonwealth Office] have said, it’s now left me with no place to stay, no money and no food and water

"Currently inside Paphos airport where they are about to close for two weeks."

Mr Edmondson has a young daughter at home in Basildon.

An FCO spokesman said: "We recognise that any British people currently overseas may be nervous about the impact of coronavirus on their travel and their health.

“We are in close contact with travel providers and our international partners to provide support to those British people affected by ongoing measures to prevent the spread of COVID-19.”
