THIS Week’s Down Memory Lane takes a look at an event which occurred 99 years ago this week, the unveiling of Grays War Memorial which stands at the junction of Orsett Road and the High Street.
The unveiling ceremony took place on Sunday March 6 1921. The memorial was unveiled by the then Lord Lieutenant of Essex, Lord Lambourne.
The memorial was designed by Mr A Cox F.R.I.B.A and consists of a white cenotaph stone column 30ft in height. On the base of the column are three copper tablets, plus a separate one for the Korean War.
In the background can be seen the old Police Station and London Road.
