A COUNCIL has quashed rumours that Canvey’s most-loved seafront fun parks will be replaced with flats.

Residents were riled up after a post emerged on social media claiming that both Leisure Island and Fantasy Island funfairs will be closing down.

Jeanette McQuilliam responded on Facebook: “I sincerely hope not.

“It’s a fantastic location for families to come together and enjoy our seafront.

“It would be a huge loss to Canvey. Homes, homes and more homes with no sound infrastructure or enough facilities for the residents.”

Ann Horgan, head of governance at Castle Point Council, blasted the rumours as “rubbish” and Leisure Island owner, Scott Petty, backed the council on the matter.

He said: “We are not closing.

“There will be a redevelopment on the seafront which will be solely to do with leisure.

“There is a working committee with the council seafront group that the traders are in.

“The Facebook post was the first I had heard of this rumour which is completely untrue.

“You just don’t need it.

“We are investing more money down the seafront for next season with some small attractions and looking at improving the whole area for leisure with Castle Point Council are behind 100 per cent.

“I think there is some confusion among residents when they hear the world development, they think it’s houses.

“The Canvey Independent Party and those on the mainland are committed to Canvey seafront.”

Councillor Dave Blackwell addressed the speculation as “fake news”

He commented: “The only plans I have heard are the Monico wanting to convert the upstairs to flats. The other amusements have been given a new lease so I hear.”
