THIS week’s photograph from the Thurrock Library photo archive shows Market Day in Grays during the 1960s.
The market was located on the corner of New Road and the High Street.
The original market place was located next to the Kings Arms Public House.
On the left is the shop of John Perring’s, dealer of furnishing and carpets.
Grays first obtain its Market Charter in 1221 and the right to hold a market fair in 1239.
Down Memory Lane is written by Andrew Burt, Librarian & Local Studies Officer at Thurrock Libraries. If you have any local history enquiries please E-mail: anburt@ thurrock.gov.uk 01375 413970
