THE transport network in Grays is set to receive a massive boost as work on a two-way system in Orsett Road gets underway.

Engineering works have now commenced between the junction connecting Derby Road and Stanley Road.

Crown Road, which was also recently developed into a two-way system as part of the programme, can be used as an alternative route while work is carried out.

The changes come following feedback from residents and businesses who voiced concerns over the town centre’s existing one-way system.

The initiative is part of a wider transport strategy which aims to make the town safer and more accessible.

It is also designed to promote job creation, while providing residents with access to new skills.

Predicted to be finished by next spring, the completion of the Orsett Road two-way system will be followed by the installation of a real time responsive traffic control system.

It will be positioned at the junctions of Derby Road and Clarence Road, Stanley Road and Clarence Road, Stanley Road and Orsett Road, and Orsett Road and Derby Road.

Until then temporary pedestrian and traffic management apparatus will be implemented during the works and existing traffic signals will be replaced with temporary ones.

Work on the new roads will come to a halt for Christmas before resuming in the New Year.

Leader of Thurrock Council, councillor Rob Gledhill, said: "Grays is an important town which has a key role in the borough’s economy and this section of the road network is vital to the free-flow of traffic and improved access to and through the town centre.

“Every effort will be made to minimise inconvenience including halting works for the Remembrance weekend and for five weeks at the end of November, to avoid disruption over the peak Christmas shopping period.”
