Fresh from scoring Richmond’s match-winning try against Darlington Mowden Park on Saturday, hooker Callum Torpey is looking forward to more success at the Athletic Ground this weekend.

The 20-year-old, who joined the club from Bury St Edmunds this pre-season, made an immediate impact on his Richmond debut last Saturday, powerfully driving through the Darlington defence in the 84th minute to clinch a thrilling three point win.

He said: “It was very surreal and an extremely proud moment. I was definitely a bit nervous when I first came on, but to then have the opportunity to score the match-winner was amazing. The trip home to London was a lot of fun to say the least”.

The hooker, who played the majority of his early rugby in Ireland, representing Ireland U18’s and Connacht A, is enjoying life at Richmond and is relishing the opportunity to play for the Men’s First XV.

He continued: “The club is brilliant and all the lads have really made me feel part of the team. Especially being a young player, the coaches and senior players have been extremely welcoming and provided a strong environment and culture for us all to perform at an elite level”.

Currently working as a coach for the club, helping deliver Richmond’s highly-successful community programme, Torpey is aiming to continue his strong start for the club in this Saturday’s opening home fixture against Chinnor.

“I have heard so many brilliant things about match day at the Richmond Athletic Ground, so I am genuinely very excited to experience it. I can’t wait to see the support in the stands and then share a beer with the Richmond fans in the bar post-game.

“I loved my first opportunity to wear the Richmond shirt and hopefully we can build on last week’s result and put in a strong performance against Chinnor on Saturday.”

Richmond are back at the Richmond Athletic Ground this Saturday 14th September against Chinnor (Kick-off: 3:00pm). Tickets are available by clicking here or at the gate.
