JOHN Sussex is confident that Basildon United have enough quality to see off Isthmian North rivals Coggeshall Town and progress in the FA Cup.

The Bees will welcome Coggeshall to the Cousins Car Wash Stadium for a first qualifying round encounter tomorrow.

Although Coggeshall are among the favourites to win promotion to the third tier of non-league football, Sussex feels his side are capable of emerging triumphant.

The Basildon chief said: “It’s a home tie, which we wanted.

“Coggeshall will go into the game as the very firm favourites to win.

“But I truly believe that, with the right attitude and a stroke of luck, we are capable of winning the game.

“We have suffered three defeats on the trot and they are favourites for promotion, but we will give them a good game.

“It will not be easy for them to beat us and we want to progress in the FA Cup ourselves.”

Basildon go into the tie having suffered three defeats in the space of eight days.

Late Isthmian North defeats to Grays Athletic and Histon were followed by an Isthmian League Cup loss to Tilbury.

And Sussex is being made to contend with a host of injuries.

“We have numerous players injured and that is a blow,” added Sussex.

“Harry Norman, Harry Doyle and Danny Norton are all injured.

“Kurt Smith is also away and it is not ideal for us because they are key players for us.

“But we have good quality in the squad and I trust everyone at the club.”
