Firefighters rescued a kitten which had got himself stuck behind a kitchen unit at a flat on Fengate Close in Chessington.

Crews used a thermal imaging camera to locate the stricken pet and removed the unit before carefully pulling him out.

Crew Manager Lee Ayres, who was at the scene, said: "The family had just rehomed the kitten from a rescue centre and he was only about nine weeks old.

"He had managed to get himself behind the kitchen units and stuck on a waste pipe in a very small space where he'd been for a few hours.

"We had to dismantle and remove the unit and then carefully pulled him out. He did put up a bit of a fight, but he was fine - it was a happy ending.

"We would always encourage people to call the RSPCA in the first instance if they see an animal stuck or in distress.

“Firefighters love animals too and we are always happy to assist if the RSPCA require our assistance and specialist equipment, as in this case."
