An inspiring teenager is set to take on the UK’s only disability triathlon.

Honey Lock, from Burnham, will take on the 2019 Superhero Triathlon in Windsor on Saturday, August 17.

She suffers from cerebral palsy, a condition which stiffens the muscles and restricts a person’s mobility.

Honey, who is a full-time wheelchair user, is taking part in the event to raise cash for Caudwell Children, a national charity which provides practical and emotional support to disabled children and their families.

The Superhero Triathlon is the first disability challenge event to be held in the UK, and Honey wants to use the event to give back to the charity which supported her through physiotherapy after recent foot reconstruction surgery.

During the event, Honey will swim 150m, cycle 3km and run 1km.

She regularly uses sticks and a walking frame to help her mobility.

Mum Rebecca, 45, said: “Honey has had several operations to improve her mobility and one of the most important things following surgery is a programme of intensive physiotherapy.

“The amount of physio that she needs can’t be accommodated by the NHS so we have to complement this with a number of private sessions each week.”

Throughout 2018, Honey’s physiotherapy cost Rebecca and husband Martin £8,000.

Martin, 49, said the challenge has become possible to complete at the perfect time for their daughter, who studies at Maldon’s Plume Academy.

He added: “Honey will be starting upper school in September where she will be preparing for her GCSEs.

“She has developed a great resilience and has had to overcome many challenges in her life, so I’m sure that she will be more than prepared for the triathlon.”

Mark Bushell, of Caudwell Children, said he was very proud to see Honey preparing for the Superhero Triathlon, and that her improvement had been “remarkable”.

He said: “We’re so proud that in the time we’ve been supporting Honey she has now reached a stage where she is taking part in a triathlon.

“She’s making remarkable progress, but she needs the public to get behind her and sponsor her determined efforts in order to raise the funds that she needs to continue her life-changing physiotherapy programme.”
