CHRIS Haigh is eager to prove himself in the National League South after making a summer switch to Concord Rangers.
The goalkeeper has joined Danny Scopes’ new-look side after a successful campaign in the Isthmian North with Heybridge Swifts.
And Haigh, who will feature between the sticks in a home friendly with Dagenham & Redbridge tonight, is keen to make the goalkeeping jersey his own at the Aspect Arena.
“I have had offers to go higher up the pyramid but I turned them down because I just need to play,” said Haigh.
“I’m 22 and I need to get games every week.
“I wouldn’t have come to Concord if I wasn’t going to be number one and I’m just delighted to be here.
“Personally, I want to prove myself at this level.
“I have played more than 200 games in the Isthmian League now so I feel like I am ready for this.
“I want to become a recognised goalkeeper at this level and I think that will happen.
“As a team, I feel like we can push on.
“We’re young, hungry and the mentality of the group is really good.
“If we get on a good run of form, I think we could surprise a few this season.”
Haigh made his debut on Saturday, when the Beach Boys went head-to-head with Championship side Millwall in their pre-season opener.
And Haigh was pleased to feature against the Lions.
“It was good to make my debut against a Championship team and I really enjoyed my 45 minutes on the pitch,” added Haigh.
“I’m delighted to be at Concord and I have been waiting for my chance to play at this level for a while.
“I have felt like I am capable of playing in the National League South for a while now, so getting the opportunity to come here was fantastic.
“All of the management staff have been great with me and I’m buzzing ahead of the new season. I can’t wait for the season to get going now.”
Haigh has made the move from Heybridge, where he worked under former Canvey Island left-back Julian Dicks.
And the shot-stopper thoroughly enjoyed his time at the Aspen Waite Arena.
Haigh admitted: “I loved it at Heybridge. To be honest, that was probably the most I have enjoyed my football in non-league.
“Heybridge are a fantastic club who are professionally run.”
