OVERNIGHT work on Birchwood Way will mean a section of it will be closed this week.

Carriageway resurfacing work will be taking place at the junction of Birchwood Way and Oakwood Gate (George Duckworth Island – the 'dogbone' roundabout) from 7pm to 5am the following morning.

The work starts this evening, Monday, for five nights until Friday, June 21.

Parts of Birchwood Way and Oakwood Gate will be closed to traffic at these times with diversion routes shown on the map below.

Warrington Guardian:

Traffic on Birchwood Way travelling towards Warrington from the M62 will be diverted onto Moss Gate and Ordnance Avenue to Oakwood Gate, then back onto Birchwood Way towards Warrington.

Traffic on Birchwood Park Avenue travelling south towards Warrington or Birchwood will be routed left onto Birchwood Way to Moss Gate, following the diversion above.

There will be no direct access from Birchwood Park Avenue to Oakwood Gate or Birchwood Way towards Warrington. Eastbound traffic on Birchwood Way and northbound traffic on Oakwood Gate won't be affected.

Bus services

Evening service 28E from Warrington to Leigh will continue to the bus gate at Faraday Street roundabout and join Ordnance Avenue to continue to Birchwood. No stops will be omitted.

The service from Leigh to Warrington won't be affected.

The last 17C service (departs Oakwood at 19.05) will be diverted along Glover Road and Crab Lane and will not serve the Roberts Fold bus stop.

What's the next stage with the roadworks?

College Place

  • Kerbline alterations at the Woolston Grange Avenue entry to the roundabout
  • Continuing work on the footways and cycleways at Crab Lane and Fearnhead Lane

Oakwood Gate area

  • Preparation for the resurfacing work noted above
  • Installation of CCTV mast in the roundabout centre
  • Trial holes in the offside verge of Birchwood Way west of Oakwood Gate.

Phase 3 (Moss Gate to M62)

  • Building up the embankment for the new carriageway continues
  • Installation of the new road drainage system.
