CASTLE Park will be transported back in time at the return of the popular Colchester Medieval Fayre this weekend.

Thousands of revellers from across the UK and further afield will descend on the park for what organisers have promised will be the biggest and best event yet.

There will be dozens of stalls and activities for the whole family to enjoy, with everything from warrior action in the arena to bird of prey displays.

Organiser Don Quinn said: “This year we have pulled out all of the stops and it is going to be a fantastic event.

“We have performers coming from Italy and Poland and archers coming from all over Europe for our now famous archery competition. I do not think there is anywhere else in the country you will see this mix of entertainment.”

There are traditional medieval as well as modern stalls, hawkers, and the usual mix of traditional singing and dancing.

Storytellers will entertain children throughout the day with tales of medieval folklore.

Mr Quinn said: “New for the archery this year we are holding a competition between the English longbow and the recurve bow which is the Eastern European equivalent.

“There will be a purse of medieval coins for the winner.”

For the adults, the much-loved Pikestaff Inn will return and one-off real ales have been created for the fayre by Colchester Brewery - Knock Off Ale and Wild Boar.

The famous Colchester Cordial will also make its annual appearance and there will be refreshment stalls open throughout both days.

Colchester Medieval Fayre takes place on Saturday, June 15 and Sunday, June 16 in Lower Castle Park, Colchester.

Tickets for each day cost £8 per adult, £4 per child under 14 and a family pass is available for £16.

Discounts are available if you buy full weekend tickets.
