Musician Dylan Cartlidge, who found fame in documentary The Mighty Redcar, will perform at Radio 1’s Big Weekend on Saturday. He told What’s On he thrilled about the gig.
What does it mean to you to have Radio 1’s Big Weekend taking place in the North-East?
Obviously it has a massive impact on the area on as its one of the biggest musical events the area has ever seen. The prospect of what seeing the world’s biggest stars on your doorstep is huge.
Have you ever performed to an audience of this size before, and if so, when?
I believe I have at festivals like Reading and Leeds, Latitude festival, SXSW all of which were amazing.
Do you have any tricks to manage your nerves before a performance of this scale?
Not at all! Whether it’s an event like this or an open mic at your local pub, my nerves are always at their peak but I always wrestle to turn it into fuel for a positive performance.
What artist’s performance are you most looking forward to seeing over the weekend?
Billie Eilish for sure! Also Foals, Stormzy…there’s too many to name!
What artist would you most like to collaborate with and why?
Stromae, Kid Cudi, Jack White or The Black Keys- any one of them would be too much to take in.
What would be your one piece of advice for new musicians?
Try not to fear change, follow your instincts & never stop believing and you might just get to live your dream.
What has been the highlight of your career to date?
There’s been a few but if I had to pick two it would be either proposing to my fiancé during a freestyle at a show or going to New York to work With Danger Mouse at Electric Lady Studios
How important is a platform like BBC Music Introducing for up-and-coming artists?
It’s the life blood of getting a chance to be listened to and supported at the earliest stages possible. It’s an invaluable tool in British music.
