A parking provider has apologised after a "glitch" caused dozens of drivers to receive illegitimate parking tickets.

Customers visiting Blackwater Retail Park in The Causeway, Maldon were furious with ParkingEye after they received parking fines, which they believe were unwarranted.

The penalty notices are issued at £60, rising to £100 if drivers do not pay up with 14 days.

The parking rules at the retail park are enforced by ANPR cameras which track vehicles as they enter and exit the car park.

ParkingEye states that around 4,000 vehicles enter the car park a day.

The provider has apologised to residents affected for the "mistake" and all who have received incorrect notices will be notified.

A spokesman said: “ParkingEye is a member of the British Parking Association (BPA) and operates an audited appeals process, motorists are encouraged to appeal if they feel there are mitigating circumstances. In the cases cited, the motorists used this system to highlight their cases and consequently the charge was cancelled.

"It is important that all motorists who believe they are in similar situations use our appeals process.which is detailed on all letters sent and accessible at www.parkingeye.co.uk.

"We do not advise ignoring charges as this can lead to further complications in the future."
