THURROCK’S MP has warned there may be “civil unrest on the streets” of Thurrock if the public are asked to vote in a second referendum about leaving the EU.

Jackie Doyle-Price appeared on BBC Sunday Politics programme over the weekend, where she faced questions on the current Brexit situation, after MPs were involved in multiple votes last week.

Ms Doyle-Price was in the minority as she voted in favour of the Prime Minster’s proposed Brexit deal, which was defeated.

Appearing on Sunday morning, she claimed it was now time for MPs to stand up and make a decision.

She said: “Everybody in Parliament has their view but it’s either the Prime Minister’s deal of not leaving at all. Across Parliament we have to get to grips with it and get something through.

“The referendum has been one of the most divisive things to happen in our politics and I really think we should move on from it.

“The idea of going back to the country with another question, for another referendum, is for the birds as far as I’m concerned. We’ve been given an instruction, it’s up to Parliament to deal with that and deal with it responsibly.”

The MP, who is also suicide prevention minister, caused a stir when asked if MPs should push for another referendum - insisting it could cause chaos in Thurrock.

She said: “I come from a constituency where, were that to happen, there would be civil unrest on the streets.”
