A plant-loving society will be hosting a talk this month.

The Hardy Plant Society’s Essex branch is inviting members to listen to a talk on lavender at Wickham Bishops Village Hall, in Church Road, on Sunday, February 24.

A World of Lavender will be presented by Dr Simon Charlesworth.

An avid lavender researcher, Mr Charlesworth owns the Downderry Nursery, which grows lavender and rosemary plants, in Tonbridge, Kent.

Starting his collection in 1991, he now holds several horticultural awards and has exported lavender species and cultivars to 26 countries.

A society spokesman said: “I have heard him speak before – he’s incredibly knowledgeable.

“He’s even studied lavender growth in Morocco.

“It should be a good talk.”

Members are advised to arrive at 2pm for a 2.15pm start.

Subscription costs at the society are £17 for a single membership, £19 for a joint membership between two people, and £10 for students.

Members will receive two issues of the Hardy Plant journal, three newsletters, access to their free seed distribution scheme, a free advice service, specialist groups, and more.

The group brings together national members from the UK to enjoy a varied programme of talks and garden visits.

Meetings include a plant stall, shop, raffle and refreshments.

In April, there is a seedling swap and from May to August a series of garden visits are arranged.

Membership runs from January to December and for members joining in October or later, membership will cover the following year.
