THE widow of a local charity fundraiser who recently lost a two year battle with cancer has described her husband as "a loving family man, a keen cyclist and a real fighter."

David Webb died on September 20 after being cared for by the staff at St Luke's Hospice during his illness, a charity he had been prolific at raising money for in the past.

David, who was known in Corringham as 'The Bike Man' through his cycling repair business End to End, was frequently able to turn his passion for cycling into a way of helping others.

In September of 1990 he became the first man to do a charity event for St Luke's hospice when he took part in the sponsored ride from Lands End to John O'Groats, raising over £1000 for the hospice in sponsorship.

Further money was raised for St Luke's in David's name at the requiem mass held at St Mary's in Corringham. The large attendance at the service was testament to David's repuatation in the community.

Mrs Webb said: "There was only standing room so many people came. We were surprised at how many people where there who we didn't realise knew David. The collection hasn't been counted yet but I know it has raised over £1000."

A cheque is being organised and Mrs Webb will be presenting it to the hospice soon.

Mrs Webb and her family have expressed their gratitude once again to everyone at the Hospice and the Elizabeth Loury Ward, Southend Hospital for their excellent care and support.

They would also like to thank Priest Father David Rollings and everyone who attended the Requiem Mass.
