READING the opinion of Rev. John Guest, (opinion Dec 3) reminds me of the time the “two tier” system was created in our postal service.

Up to then our post was wonderful, if I posted a let-ter this morning – which I did quite regularly, it was almost certain to arrive the next day, straight through, no hold ups.

Then came our genius PM Ted Heath, who decid-ed, to “improve” the service by introducing a “two tier” system, first and second class.

I wondered then how the 24 hour post could be im-proved, by helicopter with-in 12 hours perhaps?

Did he really believe that needing more staff or machinery to sort 1st from 2nd, and more storage space to slow down half the post, could improve efficiency of the service?

Let’s face it, first class was up to then, normal post, we were now going to pay more to slow it down!Separation and storage cost money, doesn’t it

Imagine the QE2 Bridge introducing “2 tier”, half the traffic having to be parked for 24 hours, hundreds of acres of space would be needed to park the “2nd class” vehicles, Lakeside would have to be flattened!

Would that be improved efficiency? Chaos!

The saddest thing is that nobody, politician or otherwise, has seen the stupidity of the system, and suggested returning to normal straight through post!
