POLICE have issued an alert to schools across south Essex following a spate of thefts in which computer equipment worth thousands of pounds has been stolen.

There have been ten reported incidents at schools since the beginning of July; the most significant being the recent theft of 32 laptop computers worth £20,000 from the Barling Magna Primary School.

In the other cases, thieves have targeted high-value, easily-transportable items such as individual laptops and a flat-screen computer monitor. In many instances, the equipment was taken from an insecure classroom or storeroom, and entry was gained to the premises via an unlocked door.

DI John Walne said: "Thieves are quick to spot any lapse in security and schools and school staff must be alert to this. It only takes minutes for a thief to walk in from the street, grab a laptop and walk out.

"The lesson here is that expensive teaching equipment must be kept under lock and key when not in use, and that premises made secure at all times."

In a number of the cases, the theft occurred towards the end of the school day, usually between 3.30 and 5.00pm when the suspects entered the school unchallenged.

DI Walne added: "If school staff are suspicious about anyone found on the school premises they should call police on 999 immediately, irrespective of any excuse the stranger may have for being there."
