AFTER the August break the Grays (Afternoon) Townswomen's Guild met at the Oddfellows Hall, Dell Road, Grays, on September 26.

Chairman Jean Aylett, welcomed 46 members and two visitors, and then introduced the speaker for the afternoon, Ann Hardy, who spoke on the history of ladies' underwear. She illustrated her talk with slides and some actual samples of Victorian underwear.

Her talk was most interesting and humorous as she described the garments and compared them to present day underwear. The Vote of Thanks was given by the Chairman.

Following a break for tea the meeting held a minute's silence to remember the late Nora Williams.

Reports were received from Secretary and Treasurer and from the various sections in the Guild. Rita Donaldson reported on the Federation Meeting held at Gidea Park and the visit to Orsett W.I. for their Coffee Evening, which was much enjoyed.

Members were reminded of the various forthcoming events - the Federation Lunch at Stock Brook, the visit to the Savoy Theatre and Mission to Seafarers at Tilbury, Leisure Day, and the Lunch at The Grasshopper.

Result of the competition "Frilly Knickers" was won by Ada King, with Pat Bannister in second place and Rita Donaldson third. The raffle was drawn.

Members were reminded next meeting is on October 24 at the Oddfellows Hall at 1.15.p.m. when the speaker will be from the Wood Green Animal Shelter and the competition an Unusual Animal Photo. New members are welcome.
