A WOMAN who decided to switch jobs after surviving a meningitis scare has opened her new show.

Willow and Fox in Quest Place, Maldon, is a women’s clothing, jewellery and gift boutique opened by former human resources officer Allison Gray.

Allison, who worked in London for 20 years, decided to change career after being struck by illness.

She said: “A few years ago, I was unwell with meningitis and the after-effects of the illness left me struggling to commit to the daily commute into the city.

“The illness had a profound effect on both my physical and mental health.

“After some soul-searching and wanting to put my health first, I decided to follow my passion and set up my own business.”

Allison prides herself on selling work by artists from the area, including Smoke and Ash Silver Jewellery from Burnham and Joolkat Screen Printed Gifts from Great Totham.

She said: “It was really important to include other local business women in the venture.

“I have tried hard to offer something different to what’s already on offer in the high street.

“There’s no point competing by selling the same stock or entering into price wars – it’s important we all work alongside each other to keep the high street alive.

“Shopping local is important, as is helping each other.

“We are just off the High Street but hopefully once people know we are here, they will visit.”

The shop is open until 8.30pm for Christmas late night shopping today and next Thursday.
