THE A13 is likely to be closed for the whole day near Basildon.

There has been a serious crash between the Five Bells junction and the A132 in Pitsea on the eastbound carriageway of the major route.

Work is underway to clear the road, but Essex Highways and Essex Police have advised that the closure is likely to be in place for some time.

Police believe two cars have been involved in the crash, with at least one person suffering serious injuries.

Motorists are being advised to avoid the area.

The A13 eastbound now has queues back to Standford le Hope. There are westbound queues back to Sadlers Farm roundabout.

Delays are prominent in and around Basildon, with slow traffic northbound on the A176 Nether Mayne from A13 to the hospital roundabout.

Traffic is slow both ways on B1464 London Road between the A176 and A132.

Gary Dastra was queuing for more than an hour and said traffic was being turned around.

He said: "The police are directing traffic. I think the whole of Basildon police turned up.

"It's all taped off and traffic is being turned around."
