A con artist tricked a shop worker out of £80 in Maldon.
The suspect confused the victim in the shop in Fullbridge by paying for food through three different transactions.
Essex Police said the practice is known as 'ringing the change'.
A spokesman said: "The unidentified suspect confused the cashier into giving him £80 by confusing him by purchasing food through three different transactions and changing up GBP notes at the same time."
The incident took place at around 5pm on October 23.
It was not until around 10pm when the cashier realised what had happened, where they immediately dialled 999.
