ONE man was treated for smoke inhalation after a fire on Canvey's seafront this afternoon.

The fire service descended on Eastern Esplanade after a chip pan fire broke out in Bruno's fish and chip shop.

As a result neighbouring businesses were forced to evacuate, including the MovieStarr cinema.

Essex Fire have confirmed the incident started as a chip pan fire.

One man was treated at the scene for smoke inhalation, and was left in the care of the ambulance service.

A spokesman for Essex Fire said: "Firefighters were called to reports of a fire in a shop this afternoon.

"On arrival crews reported that the shop was completely smoke logged and one man in his thirties was suffering from the effects of smoke inhalation.

"Firefighters extinguished the fire, which was caused after a deep fat fryer ignited, by 3.34pm. Crews used positive pressure ventilation fans to remove the remaining smoke from the premises, before checking for hotspots within the shop and neighbouring properties.

"The man was left in the care of the Ambulance Service."
