A SEVEN year old girl who due to a number of complex medical conditions has had to live her whole life in a wheelchair has been given her dream holiday of going to Disney World in Florida by a charity.

Lily-Mai Steele, a pupil at Beacon Hill Academy Special School from Grays had major heart and organ failure when she was just eight days.

This was followed by a major stroke when she was only ten weeks old.

Following a young life of pain and hardship, her mum and dad, Laura and Shaun applied to Caudwell Children's annual Destination Dreams holiday to Disney World, in Florida to help bring Lily-Mai some unforgettable memories.

The national charity that provides practical and emotional support to disabled children and their families.

This year, the family have been selected to be one of the 25 families with life threatening conditions that are being taken on the holiday.

However, the race is now on to raise the necessary funds to cover the cost of the holiday.

Mum, Laura, 30, said: “The families are really well looked after as the charity provide a dedicated team of paediatric doctors and nurses who are available 24/7.

“The fact that there will be a team of paediatric doctors and nurses with us on the flight, and throughout the holiday, gives us real confidence.”

They charity also take along over 40 volunteers to assist families around the theme parks.

Shaun, also 30, added: “Because of the associated costs of taking very poorly children overseas the charity has to pay, on average, £12,000 per family.

“But with the current economic climate there’s always the risk that they won’t be able to raise enough money by the time the holiday comes around in December 2018.

“Therefore, all the families on the trip have decided to appeal to their local community to ensure that we get on that plane to Florida, in December.”

Lily-Mai, who is very fond of princesses is still unable to talk and her parents have found in recent years that people "often stare" so they don't go out very much anymore.

Laura said: “We know Lily-Mai’s condition is terminal but we don’t know how much time we have left with her.

"So to be able to have a happy experience, as a family, that we will remember forever, will be unbelievable!”
