THURROCK Council has warned residents the incident which prompted the closure of the Aveley Bypass could prompt an extra police presence.

Rob Gledhill, leader of the Council, has sought to reassure residents following the incident on Saturday, which saw Essex Police close the Aveley Bypass.

Essex Police is yet to confirm the nature of the incident which has launched a search for a driver of a BMW, as well as a large knife.

The drama began at 4.30pm on Saturday following reports of an argument and a crash on the bypass, during which the weapon was seen.

The row is believed to have taken place between the occupants of a silver Mercedes and blue BMW, which were also involved in a crash.

It sparked rumours on social media that the incident was a terror attack, but police responded by saying "it was not Terrorism related".

Mr Gledhill said: “The reports on social media of this being terrorist-related were somewhat premature and inaccurate. The police responded swiftly and effectively to tackle this criminal incident.

“I want to thank Essex Police for their response and how they continue to keep the residents of Thurrock safe.

“The council has been in contact with the police and would re-assure residents there is no need for alarm.”

He added: “Residents may see an increased police presence in the area – this is normal as police conduct searches of the area as part of their enquiries.

“I would urge anyone who has information which could assist the police to call 101.”
