An East Tilbury drum sergeant has been awarded with an honorary medal to mark his 30 years’ service to the Lord Mayor of London’s Ceremonial Coach.

William Papworth, 60, of Seabrooke Rise, Grays, known to locals as “Bill”, was given a “Medal of the British People” on Thursday June 2 for his work for the Lord Mayor.

Mr Papworth received the award for serving three decades as Brakeman on the magnificent Ceremonial Coach for the Lord Mayor, as well as undertaking community work.

New Thurrock Mayor Councillor Cathy Kent presented him with the prize in her first appointment in post at a special ceremony at Corringham Village Hall.

William was presented with the Medal and also a letter from Dominic Reid OBE, The Pageant Master for The Lord Mayor’s Show thanking Bill for his service to the Show for thirty years.

Sutherland Pipe and Drum Band, who have been playing in the Corringham area for over 50 years, marked the occasion with music.
