The full list of candidates for the local Thurrock election on Thursday, May 5, has been announced.
Seventeen of the council’s 20 wards have elections this year and the three main local political parties – Labour, Conservative, and the UK Independence Party have candidates named in each.
Independent candidates are standing in The Homesteads and the Grays Thurrock wards.
The council, which has 49 seats divided into 20 wards, is elected “by thirds” with one third of members being elected every four years – next year is a “fallow” year with no local election scheduled.
The three wards with no local election in May are Little Thurrock Rectory, Stifford Clays, and Tilbury Riverside and Thurrock Park. Voters there will only be able to take part in the Police and Crime Commissioner election being held on the same day.
Currently on Thurrock Council the Labour Party has 18 seats, the Conservative Party has 17, the UK Independence Party 11 and there are three independent members.
Polling stations will be open from 7am to 10pm on 5 May and poll cards will give details of which polling station to attend. Voters do not need to take the poll card with them, but people must be on the register to vote.
Residents can apply to register to vote until midnight on Monday, 18 April by visiting gov.uk/register-to-vote or by calling 01375 652 816. They can also contact Thurrock Council’s electoral services by emailing electoral.services@thurrock.gov.uk People wishing for a postal vote must apply by 5pm on Tuesday, 19 April. Existing postal voters will receive their postal vote packs from Monday, 18 April.
