THERE’S the inspirational and downright repulsive in this week’s Gazette.

Two stories that are incredible for two very different reasons.
The fighting spirit of Tilbury dad John Rushton is breathtaking.

He had, as he puts it, a sniffle, in the lead-up to Christmas.
However, by Boxing Day he was so ill he was rushed to hospital with pneumonia and was soon in a coma with his  wife told to expect the worse.

John had contracted septicaemia and his limbs started to rot. Eventually he had to have four amputations, including both his legs.

Yet John’s spirit is, frankly, amazing. He is staying positive and determined to get back to a normal way of life for his wife, Janine, and their beloved daughter, Amy, ten.

Inspiring stuff, unlike the goings on at a lake in Aveley where four baby swans were shot dead by thugs. Your heart just sinks doesn’t it? What the hell goes through the tiny little minds of the people who open fire on two adult swans and their eight babies? I don’t want to know.

Let’s hope the police catch up with these yobs and deal with them – severely.

Meanwhile, the last word here should be for John Rushton. His attitude is an example to us all and this  quote from him sums things up: “It’s been tough, but there’s no way I am letting this beat me.”
