The Queen has appointed three former heads of the Armed Forces to h onorary five star rank.
The ex-military men who receive the honour are Admiral Lord Boyce, Lord Walker of Aldringham, and Air Chief Marshal Lord Stirrup, who all served as chief of the defence staff during the 2000s.
The appointment to honorary five star rank is decided by the Sovereign alone and is made sparingly.
Admiral Lord Boyce is appointed to the honorary rank of Admiral of the Fleet, Lord Walker has the honorary rank of Field Marshal and Air Chief Marshal Lord Stirrup now has the honorary rank of Marshal of the Royal Air Force.
Three members of the Royal Family hold five star rank - the Duke of Edinburgh and Prince of Wales, both in all three services, and the Duke of Kent as Field Marshal.
