Tilbury lose their heads again as Witham's escape tunnel opens up

Tilbury 1, Witham Town 2

SHOULD Tilbury slip back into the Essex Senior League, the inquest on their Ryman Division One North campaign will focus on several pivotal matches.

High on the list will be Tuesday night's thumping defeat at Wivenhoe, but more pertinent is today's encounter.

For much of what was admittedly a very poor match Dockers looked the better side, particularly in the opening 45 minutes.

But they spurned the advantage of a third minute opening goal and only in the final moments, when imminent defeat appeared to motivate them out of a strange lethargy, did they show real commitment.

Unfortunately Tilbury's players are developing a persecution complex. At the end of today's match many players and assistant manager Alan Moulder made a beeline for referee Neil West and vented their spleen.

Yet to blame the referee for the defeat is shutting the stable door after the horse has bolted.

Sure, he made a few mistakes but it was Tilbury's lack of concentration and dearth of ideas that cost them dear, never more so than for the equalising goal.

Erkan Yusuf was undoubtedly tripped as he ran with the ball, losing possession midway in the Witham half but when 30 seconds later Bradley Smart's clumsy tackle felled Phil Goodwin in the box Tilbury's minds were still on the foul that Mr West never gave rather than the job in hand which was defending.

Smart may say he played the ball before the man but this reporter's view, admittedly from 60 yards away, was that it looked a stonewall spot-kick and what Tilbury ought to be asking is why they allowed the situation to develop and Smart felt the need to make an ill-judged challenge.

Smart, who had looked so composed in recent matches, appeared to have the world on his shoulders throughout the game. Never a man given to beaming smiles, he was still strangely out of sorts, a criticism that could be levelled at several players today.

Yet it had all looked so promising in the opening minutes when Sam Groombridge's quick throw-in set Yusuf free and he lobbed Town's new keeper Rhys Madden for that early opening goal.

Tilbury looked as though they would crack on from that and they looked a far better side than shapeless Witham. However, bookings in quick succession for Jamie Gray and Martyn Guest took the fire out of their midfield and set the tone for the rest of the match.

Both bookings had justification, though both were a little harsh and might not have been given on another day, but Tilbury should have learned by now to shrug off the feeling that 'nobody loves us' and get on with the game.

Instead they faltered and when Paul King picked up his 12th yellow card of the season for stopping David Hawes en-route to goal you suspected Tilbury's heads might be going.

The lapse of concentration on 36 minutes that led to Rob King smashing home the equalising spot kick typified their state of mind.

What was also evident was a lack of invention.

With top scorer Kurt Smith arriving late and on the bench because of work commitments Tilbury's front pairing was Chris Stowe and newcomer Tom Poole, signed from Aveley, but they rarely got a chance to spark as Dockers had no idea what to do with the large amount of possession they enjoyed.

One run through and chip over the bar from Poole and a strong set-piece King header in the closing moments of the half was about all they could muster.

The second half degenerated as it went on.

Neither side had the composure to get the ball down and play and the ball was banged about the midfield like a hand grenade with the pin pulled. No-one wanted it and everyone wanted to get rid of it as soon as they had it.

Smith came on for the lethargic Stowe after 67 minutes and when another sub, young Danny O'Connor, came on for Guest something finally clicked and the two combined for Smith to turn back inside and thrash a stinging volley that Maddan could only parry. When the ball eventually bobbled to Gray his powerful shot was wide.

The game's decisive moment arrived on 80 minutes when King and keeper Richard Wray got in a muddle dealing with a long ball and it broke free across the face of the box. There appeared no problem as Groombridge looked to have the danger covered but he hesitated fatally with his clearance and the ball ran away from him to substitute Jamie Ricks who walked it into an empty net.

It was a calamitous goal to concede and the desperation of their situation finally seemed to kick in for Dockers, who ploughed forward with real intent at last.

Poole was desperately unlucky when he crashed a shot against the foot of the post and then he forced a fine save from Maddan with a fierce angled drive.

But it was too little, too late. And Tilbury, who suffered further anguish when news of victories for relegation rivals Waltham Forest and Wivenhoe filtered through, ought to have been blaming themselves rather than looking at Mr West as the scapegoat.

At the end of a couple of recent fine performances Tilbury boss John Lawrence has played the theme from the Great Escape in the dressing room afterwards. At the end of this match he must have felt like Charles Bonson when the tunnel caved in on him.

If there's a glimmer of hope for the genial Dockers boss, it must be that in the end Bronson, or rather his character 'Tunnel King' Danny Velinski was one of the few that made it to safety!

Tilbury: Richard Wray, Sam Groombridge, Danny Smith, Bradley Smart, Paul King, Martyn Guest (Danny OConnor), Erkan Yusef, Jamie Gray, Tom Poole, Chris Stowe (Kurt Smith), James Dwyer (Luke Stanley). Subs not used: Paul Agu, Nathan Philip.

i play for tilbury just signed again to keep them up which is what me and the players and manger will do, john has a very low budget at the club and is doing the best he can for what he s got to work with at the club, if you all think you can do better then put your cv into tilbury .... thought not
Posted by: amazed, tilbury on 7:39pm Mon 25 Feb 08
well said brad. I wonder what the result would have been if tilbury had been allowed to play wivenhoe weeks ago before wivenhoe had their new 'budget'in place, but it was called off after tilbury got there I believe, Is that right ginsters?

players need to stop having a go at the refs and concentrate on what they should be doing as a team and not what they think the ref should have given earlier in the game

fair comment brad you are all in this together but need to stop giving away the penaltys brad 2in 2 good luck boys

Brad, i have seen you play many times. You are playing way below your standard at Tilbury. I was surprised you are there and although your loyalty is admirable face facts that you are getting dragged down to a lower level. Suddenly your giving away silly penalties and argueing with refs. Ask yourself if at the end of the season you will be a better player than you were at the start and if not make sure that is your personal goal next year.

No point in harking back to a previously postponed match - which as you well know is the (independent) referee's call not the home club's... My only argument is with the attitude of the Tilbury players, management and fans which, frankly, stinks.

Even your own former joint manager and Gazette scribe agrees that you need to focus on the football and stop the whinging. I'd go further than that, you also need to stop the feeble threats of violence too. It strikes me that there are far too many people involved with your club who fancy themselves as non-league's answer to Millwall. It's pathetic. I've got no qualms with a small local club fighting proudly for their future (hell, we're one), but I've got no time at all for the type of behaviour that I now unfortunately associate with your team.... And it's far from the first time.

ginster your near on slanderous comments are a joke mate. Threats of violence what are you talking about, the only person I heard making violent threats was your physio mate.Or does that make it ok cos he's connected with wivenhoe. Your comments are why out of line and over the top. I no you love your club mate but you are taking this a bit to far.
Remind me did you not have a spot of bother when you played Brentwood. What was that for. People in glass houses should not throw stones. A bit of banter is one thing but really feel you have said one untruth to many now.

Oh dear unhappy, you don't have a great grasp on the complexities of civil law do you? Slander applies to the spoken word, in the written context it's libel..... In any event my comments don't fall into either category, I can make the allegations because the comments concerned were made within my ear shot. As for our physio's behaviour, that's an interesting allegation that you're making but one that is why out of character for the gentleman concerned.

If you honestly believe that there's nothing wrong with the conduct of people associated with your club then that's your choice, but I'd be looking for my Saturday afternoon entertainment elsewhere if I was you.

You are unreal because its out of character for your physio makes it alright does it. I cannot be bothered responding to your comments anymore you are to self righteous for my liking, go back and carrying on chewing on your dictionary.

Ginsters my friend, Sounds like your in a spot of bother. The truth must hurt mate. Go back chewing on your dictionary! what sort of comment is that. You cant stand the fact that you have been told and you can stand the fact that wivenhoe have picked up and were staying in the ryman league. Good luck in the essex senior league next year. From what i have seen of concord rangers and enfield you wont be back up next year. Still a win against hullbridge might get your hopes up. Come on wivenhoe we can do this!!!!!!!!!! and ginsters chew on your ryman league memories mate because theres not much of a future for you in this league!!

Id rather have a manager who is honest namely john lawrence than a kid that is a con man in football and owes numerous players money. RC owes 3 grand to tiptree! why did RC move house, mmm think it was due to death threats from players. hes a fake and never man enough to admit it. I like his idea though of him paying his players monthly so he has them for 4 weeks before they get wind they wont be getting there money!! thats why its like a revolving door ginsters. oh and ginsters are you sure your not RC or pully yourself!
brad smart spot on, you kingy, erkan and gray will keep the club up. you all know you have been unlucky last few games. you beat the top sides!
Posted by: brad smart on 11:14pm Wed 27 Feb 08
i onestly beleave we will stay up , we ve just got to get our heads down , stay off the refs back unless need be !!! and get some wins under our belts, we wil suprise many by staying up , have faith ! i certainly am not giving up

smart you have some front mate you are playing poor and giving away penalties, looks like you are going to be worth a goal again like Agu, no wonder the opposition wants you to play, thats if your not banned.
