Penalty heartache for Tilbury and Smiths in cup thriller

Burnham Ramblers 2, Tilbury 2

(Burnham won 3-2 on penalties)

AN enthralling, exciting East Anglian Cup tie swayed this way and that at Essex Senior League Burnham on Tuesday evening, ending in a dramatic penalty shoot-out which mirrored the game by keeping supporters of both sides on a knife edge.

Dockers looked down and out at one point but clawed their way back, only to lose the tie with the final kick of a memorable night.

Ryman Division One North Tilbury twice held the lead in normal time and young enigmatic striker Kurt Smith, having scored a spectacular goal, showed his trademark fallibility from close range by missing two glorious chances, the second a penalty.

Dockers took the lead after just ten minutes when James Dwyer outpaced one time Tilbury player manager Garry Kimble, now the number two at Burnham and making a rare outing, and picked out Jamie Gray with his cross. Gray provided an accomplished finish, knocking the ball past another ex-Chadfields player, keeper Dave McCartney.

Ramblers could have drawn level soon after when Kasey Scotter and Paul Agu got in a muddle allowing former Welsh international Carl Griffiths the chance to roll the ball into an empty net but he knocked it wide of the post.

However the same three were involved in Burnham's equaliser on 26 minutes when a long clearance struck Scotter on the back of his head, moving it away from Agu who had come to collect and Griffiths was able to lob him from all of 40 yards.

Dockers, who gave an outing to several of their fringe players, made a bright start to the second half and Kurt Smith showed the best side of his game on 54 minutes, crashing home a superb volley.

However, three minutes later he fluffed a golden opportunity to extend the lead when a fine through ball from Gray set him free but though he got the ball past McCartney, he clipped the outside of the post.

Dockers made two changes, bringing on Kyle Shovlar for Danny O'Connor and Chris Stowe for Andre Humphreys and Stowe nearly scored when McCartney fumbled a Gray effort but recovered to save the sub's strike at goal.

Ramblers began to come back into the game and Dockers were grateful to Danny Smith who cleared a Chris Day effort off the line.

But resistance crumbled when Ricky Cornish engineered a quickly taken free kick, picking out Jack Callow whose left foot drive gave Agu no chance.

Stowe then conjured up an opportunity for Kurt Smith to win the tie when he was fouled in the box but McCartney proved equal to the spot kick, diving to smother the ball.

Extra time was a flurry of activity, with play switching rapidly from end to end as both sides desperately sought a winner.

There was even a Tilbury debut for physio Steve Taylor who replaced Martyn Guest late in the match, reward for him turning up at the game with his heavily pregnant wife, already past her due date!

With the couple's special delivery perhaps just hours away, Tilbury prayed for the deliverance of a winning goal but it didn't come, setting up the agony of a penalty shoot-out.

Tilbury missed their first two, while Burnham converted theirs. That looked it for Dockers but the massively experienced Kimble and Griffiths lost their nerve to miss, setting up a dramatic finale.

Lee Norfolk converted for Burnham, piling the pressure on Danny Smith. His namesake up front had declined to partake in the shoot-out, perhaps unnerved by his earlier miss, and Danny was left in despair when he too misfired.

Tilbury: Paul Agu, Jon Whiteman, Danny Smith, Nathan Philip, Kasey Scotter, Martyn Guest (Steve Taylor), Danny O'Connor (Kyle Shovlar), Jamie Gray, Kurt Smith, James Dwyer, Andre Humphrey (Chris Stowe). Subs not used: Tony Vincent.

So much for being unlucky against us, you couldn't even beat the Essex Senior League **** down the road!

Can anyone please tell me if Kyle Shovlar is any relation to the great Ginger Shovlar who played for Tilbury in the 50's & 60's

Can anybody tell me if Tilbury's sub Tony Vincent is any relation to Tim Vincent who used to present Blue Peter?

Can anyone explain how a club who are having a less then great season and could do with a cup run to distract the gathering masses, play a cup tie with so called fringe players against a fairly strong esl team in a competition they could do well in.Now thats a curious management decision.

Quite simple Paul. League survival is far more important. Everybody and their aunt have been telling John Lawrence to make changes. Well he had a chance to test out some players and see what they are made of. Seems like sensible management to me. In ten years no-one will remember who won this mickey mouse cup, but they might remember it as the season Tilbury were relegated. It's a question of priority. And as it went to the tenth penalty Tilbury could well have won it anyway, which would have left you looking silly asking the question. Narrow margins my friend.

If i want to remember the season tilbury got relegated i wouldn't have to think back to far. Not as far back as i would have to remember as to the last thing tilbury did win. If this is a mickey mouse cup what did you consider the thameside trophey that you were in the final of last year. I seem to remember your club quite up for winning that. I promise you i am not of the view that john should go especially with his budget because there are many esl clubs with better budgets than him. But as a club Tilbury should want to win anything they are in. How would i look silly if you had won on penalties or even in normal or extra time. As a club you still would have risked being knocked out of the only thing you can win. As it is you are out and whatever the outcome of the final part of the season i cant see anybody jumping up and down on the side on the last day of the season wheather you escape relegation or not. I think the paying few would however have a little cheer at even an east anglian cup win.

Well, scraped through 2-1 against Hullbridge Sports of the Essex Senior League & for most of last nights game we were technicaly second best to what can only be described as a Burnham Ramblers outfit not at full strength who look very much a Ryman Div 1 club. Ive been waiting for somebody to start ranting off about the Referee didn't do us any favours, no problem with last nights Referee. We created more than enough chances to have comfortably won the game in normal time. As for first team fringe players, where have the recent batch come from, not our reserves as we dont have one. Ive said before that players have come and players have gone. There still coming and we still do not look any better. John is bringing these players in so the buck surely must stop with him or the person who is advising him on what players he should be bringing in. I think its clear by now that John and his assistant lack man management and motivational skills. Why doesn't he stick with a settled team enabling those players who are good enough to play with the confidence and beleif that will im sure get the club out of its current situation. What is it that John dont see? Forgeting that John and his assistant are nice people for a moment. We are actually in the bottom three looking over our shoulders, pre season has long gone so why on earth we are still taking chances with players at this stage of the season is beyond me. John clearly had his team in place before the season started so whats gone wrong? I personaly feel that he has been ill advised by a person(s) who clearly has not got a clue as to who he should and should not play. The Chairman is clearly not bothered as to where the club plays, Ryman div 1 or Essex Senior. Yeh, maybe he does put his hand in his pocket but im sure the income in general with the club must be more than what goes out otherwise how does the club survive????, no silly comments please! If our Chairman was concerned as to the predicament his team was in he like any other footballing Chairman would have intervened one way or another by now. Other Chaimain and his committee have and will continue to do so. I beleive the Chairman would be quite happy to have the team competing in the Essex Senior league for the 2008/9 season, after all, players appearance money will be cut drastictally if not stopped all together. From previous comments regarding, 'is the Chairman happy in the way his team is being managed' somebody claiming to know him very well said 'yes he is very happy with the way the team is being managed' that is either an outrageouse idiotic self beleif comment or the Chaiman like some others are really resigned to the fact that he really dont care where the team plays as long as he gets his regular income over HIS bar. I recently see an episode of Open all hours and had to chuckle to myself. Anyway as always thats my fortnightly rant. A plea to the Manager, please show a little more enthusiasm than you did when the final whistle went last night to signal a penalty shoot out. Your body language suggested by the way you sat head down body lurched with arms crossed that you already accepted defeat. What kind of a signal does that give out to your players? Stop experimenting with the team and let the players you have express themselves and show that given a regular place in the starting line-up they will settle and im sure with a little luck produce whats needed to keep my beloved Tilbury F.C. competing at Ryman division 1 for the 2008/9 season. Who knows, instead of taking idiotic advice from those around you and stick with your own beleifs, those players you have got may just supprise you. If they dont then there can only be one outcome, and for what my oppinion is worth, stand down and let somebody with better man managemet skills motivate the players who will prove are good enough. If i have not made sense, would someone else please explain with out being rude what they believe is the answere. Please say something different from bad referees, low budget and all the other silly excuses that have been given on here. Just remember the team and budget was in place before the season started!!! All my very best to the players. As always beleive in yourselves, you are good enough if left alone long enough to play as a settled team. Regards, Alf.

Everything you have said Alf is spot on in my view and makes absolute sense. Keep writing mate.

yes spot on comments alf. i have nothing to do with your club as im a maldon supporter but what you are saying makes complete sense. Not beating an essex senior leage outfit is not very encouraging for your team. Like some people have said on here about playing so called fringe players, why do that if its the last cup your in. At least try and get to a final of a cup get a bit of confidence in and around the club and it would have been a day out for the club. Never mind though there's always the battle of staying in the ryman league to fall back on now. Alf you was right mate. A neautral definetly would have said that burnham were the ryman team last night. And as for saturday moaning about you should have had a penalty!! You had enough penalties to win the game last night tilbury. Anyway lets hope you stay up. Good luck

He might have a grudge to bear but what he writes isn't all wrong is it. Thats the problem with these forum type things. If you say on them what everyone says on the sidelines you get battered down. If you defend the team they do the same. Lets sum Tilbury up this season. They are not in with a cahnce of winning anything and they sit third from bottom. The results dont lie and for whatever reason the team have proved week in and out not to be good eneough to get enough wins to take them away from the bottom. I have read after most games on these reports that tilbury have battled well or been unlucky but no team is unlucky every week. Face facts the team is where it is for a reason. I am not in a position to say why as it may be the manager, the chairman , the board or the players. but coming on here and moaning about who writes the reports and what is said by whom is really not the biggest concern for you all. My last comment is i find it a little unfair to batter mark southgate on here for writing a less then complimentary report. I do have a link with your club and i know the members around it. In my experience Mark is purley a volunteer who gives alot of free time and effort towards the club. Unlike robin nash who i believe works at the club full time and is obviousley earning money from it if that is the case and he is travelling alot. Surley if you work many hours a week and deal with all the clubs paperwork for free you deserve to call a game as you see it from time to time. i am not trying to start a Southgate appreciation society just calling it as i see it.
