Tilbury outgunned by improving Northwood

Tilbury 0, Northwood 2

THOUGH Tilbury have played much worse than this, they found themselves deservedly beaten at a muddy, windswept Chadfields this afternoon.

Still on a high from the midweek relegation battle win at Ilford, Dockers certainly edged the first half of this Ryman Division One North but in the second half they missed a glorious chance, then were ruthlessly put to the sword by a side able to up their pace, tempo and skill levels.

Pre-match the focus of attention was on each side's young striker. Kurt Smith has collected 18 goals this season but he is eclipsed by Northwood's exciting young marksman Elliott Buchanan who has garnered 21.

Barnet boss Paul Fairclough was among those attracted to watch Buchanan but it proved a wasted trip as the youngster injured himself ten minutes into the match, his enthusiasm taking him into a clash with Tilbury keeper Paul Agu and he came off worst, picking up a damaged knee.

Fairclough, apparently not interested in Smith or anyone else, was reported to have left soon after but he would have been wasting his time staying as the young Docker was strangely starved of the ball and didn't have a sniff at goal throughout the match.

In fact he was eclipsed up front by strike partner James Dwyer who turned in a decent performance, coming closest to a goal with a clever first half effort that hit the post and a second half header that he ballooned over the bar when he ought to have done better.

With the wind at their backs in the first half Dockers dominated possession but though the mercurial Andre Humphrey had one of his better games and another teenager Danny O'Connor asked a couple of questions with shots on target, they were largely toothless.

Northwood, who were lucky to see Abdul Yoki escape even a yellow card for an ugly kick at Agu soon after Buchanan's departure, suffered another blow when Ryan Tackley had to go off after getting a whack on the head.

But they adjusted defensively and kept Tilbury at bay, other than Dwyer's clever effort a minute before half time when he skipped to the by-line and from the most acute of angles bent the ball around keeper Ben Harris, only to see it come back of the far post, with no-one astute enough to follow up with an empty net waiting.

Northwood got the hairdryer treatment from manager Colin Payne in the dressing room and they came out a much improved side after the break, getting the ball in the net through Jerome Hall in the half's opening minutes though it was disallowed for a push.

Buchanan's replacement, Adrian Abramian, was then put through but denied by a superb tackle from Tilbury's Danny Smith.

Soon after it was against the run of play when Dwyer got his second chance of the match, but though he rose head and shoulders above everyone else to meet Luke Purcell's cross he put it high over the bar.

Purcell, who was to be replaced by Matthew Knight when he evntually ran out of steam, had enjoyed an impressive performance in the heart of midfield, bringing much-needed strength and aggression to that department, but he - like his midfield colleagues, were missing when Northwood got their opening goal on 68 minutes.

Dockers were caught by a speedy Northwood counter attack but the back four raced back to get in position and clear Michael Gordon's first cross.

However, though the defensive header wasn't the strongest, Northwood's players following up were unchallenged as they picked it up and fed it back to Gordon and he picked out Abramian with a peach of a low cross, leaving the substitute the easiest of tap ins.

Gordon was becoming the man of the match with his pace and power and never was it better illustrated than in the 73rd minute when he was allowed space on the edge of the box to pick up the ball.

He darted into the box and picked his spot, thrashing a fierce spot inside Agu's near post.

The keeper, who retained his place after Wednesday's win with youngster Danny Spendlove apparently ditched as he didn't even feature on the bench, might be faulted for his positioning, but he wasn't half as culpable as his outfield teammates.

Probably most guilty was Luke Stanley, who looked increasingly lightweight and out of sorts before being hooked by manager John Lawrence with 15 minutes to go in favour of another striker Joshua Coulson.

Coulson almost made an impact after an opportunity was carved out for him by Lee Springer, who had replaced Dwyer in the wake of the opening goal, but he lashed his shot wide, opting to use his right foot when the angle favoured his left and with that Tilbury's chance of a fightback was gone.

Northwood ended the match with ten men as Jerome Hall went off with a facial injury but they more than comfortably held on.

Results elsewhere weren't that favourable for Tilbury, with Ilford picking up a win, Waltham Abbey getting three points and Waltham Forest one against Aveley.

However, Dockers' destiny still rests firmly in their own hands and they will hope to make the most of a south Essex derby back at Chadfields on Tuesday when Great Wakering Rovers are the visitors.

Dockers will have skipper Paul King, who was suspended for the Northwood game, back and manager Lawrence may well introduce at least one new face.

Tilbury also have a date at Soho Square on Tuesday with the hearing following the abandoned match against Waltham Abbey due to take place. Dockers face charges of failing to control their players but believe they have a good case to take to London.

Tilbury: Paul Agu, Danny Smith, Gbenga Sonuga, Jay Taylor, Luke Purcell (Matthew Knight), Sam Groombridge, Andre Humphrey, Danny O'Connor, Kurt Smith, James Dwyer (Lee Springer), Luke Stanley (Joshua Coulson). Subs not used: Nathan Philip, Kasey Scotter.

Neil you dick head call yourself an editor you wasn't even at the match. You turned up to the Ilford match halfway through the second half as i saw you with your 'manbag' and spent your time with the prawn sandwich brigade(you then put your name to a report), looks like you will put your name to anything you ****. So much is wrong in this report i can't think of where to start, you don't even know what subs were used as thats wrong so what chance have you got of doing any proper sort of report.I'm sure there will be plenty of other comments.

Prawn sandwiches at Ilford and Tilbury? I thought it was jellied eels that was the local seafood favourite...Personal
lyI'm a pie and peas man (yes I ate most of them!).
As for football watching and match reports; opinions vary and everyone is entitled to their own, that's what makes football so interesting.
Pleae feel free to air your views and criticism here (even compliments if there's anyone who even mildly agrees with me), though a little less abusive language would be appreciated.
I can only call it as I see it and, if anyone is at all interested I was at all of today's game. Like a lot of dads at the Dockers these days I take my little lad, (he was the one on the Thomas the Tank bicycle). I mention that as normally it's little kids who spit their dummies out, not the dads.
As for me and my man bag at Ilford (where they don't do prawns but I had the best cup of tea anywhere all season), true enough I wasn't there for the whole match due to train chaos - hence most of the report was an interview with John, some of it based on what I saw in the second half, and information supplied by John and the club secretary on the first half.
I'm glad Tilbury is getting a good following on the web, hopefully it will drag a few more in through the gates eventually, but wouldn't it also be nice if people were brave enough to put their own names to things - as I do.

Well, 'tilbury' absolutley bang on my friend!! Neil what are you doing fella, your killing the club. Are you taught to be negative with everything that you write about Tilbury Football Club? Are the people that employ you at this news paper so very blind as to see that you clearly have a negative issue from the past with this football club. I can not beleive that your superiors have not intervened with your negative, irresponsible reporting. Neil, you obviously do not attend all fixtures and therfore whoever is supplying you with these idiotic match reports need to be told they are clearly in the wrong job, or need to change their glasses(You know who you are).
On to today's game, other than i thought we started reasonably well, what happend in the second half? Im not going to express to much of an opinion as it is sure to attract some idiotic response. Mr King we missed your presence today. The only other thing i would like to say, after weeks of many oppinions being expressed on this site, not once have i heard or seen a response from the Chairman of Tilbury Football Club?????? If for some reason, Mr Chairman, you are looking in tonight? Are you honestly happy with the way your club is being managed by your manager and his assistant. Nice genuine people but have you and your Committee not been following the teams poor results over the last couple of months? Players have come and players have gone but nothing changes. Mr Chairman, time to address your club, supporters and players outlinning your intentions before its to late and the club competes at Essex Senior level for the 2008/09 campaign. Regards, Alf.

Hang on Alf, on the one hand you slag off the reporter for being negative, then you slag off the football club. I've no particular flag to fly for Neil Speight but I know for a fact that if everyone who is supposed to be a supporter had done as much for Tilbury over the last few years as Neil, then the club wouldn't be in the situation it is. He had no chance of saving the club from relegation but did his best and put a lot of time and money in. For his efforts he got the sack but instead of taking his bat and ball home he has not only put more money the club's way he does a lot of work behind the scenes. At least two other local clubs have asked him to join their staff but he has publically said that the only club he would work for again officially would be Tilbury but he has no intention of wanting to work for any club as he is enjoying having time to himself and with his kids. I don't always agree with his reports but I have read the one above and it is a fair reflection of the game. Tilbury started well but missed their few chances and Northwood always looked likely to win it. If you don't think that, then you know nothing about football or you too were not at the game.

Alf,I will make a response for the chairman as i know him well and the answer to your question is "yes" he is happy with the way the club is managed,"yes" he would love the results to have been better but under John and his team they have got the team playing with passion and looking like they want to play for the Dockers, which we haven't seen for a few season's.And under the financial circumstances we're doing ok.
As for the chairman addressing the fans, why don't you approach him and tell him where the club could improve,he's a nice guy and will listen to you,he might not agree but have the balls and approach him.

To Neil, Kev?, John?
Gentlemen, apologies if you think in your oppinion's that ive spoken out of term. Neil, although im not always in agreement with what you write, some of your reports are reasonably true. I knew when i was writing my previouse comment that it would stir up some response. Clearly there are commonsense isues at the club that cant or wont be addresed. I will continue to trudge along to Chadfeilds on a Saturday afternoon for a couple of pints and to support my local club in hope that the obviouse issues at some stage will be addresed. Im to old in the tooth to be getting into disagreements with fellow supporters etc.
After all what do i know? Im sure that will attract some sort of an answere, nothing rude, please! Good luck to the current batch of players, have a little more belief,if only in yourselves. Lastly, why cant we as supporters be treated to a little pre-match entertainment, if only to some music on the Stadium's address system creating at least some sort of atmosphere befor the start of our home fixtures? Kindest regards, Alf. PS, Good luck to the squad for Tuesday's game. Dont forget, a little more beleif.

there is nothing wrong with management at all. you have to remember they have hardly no money to attract the more experienced players,so they have to play youngsters which i think are doing well.there have been many games where we have deserved to win.i think we need that bit of luck. maybe if ppl get behind the team as much as they slag them off then im sure you will see alot more confidence on the pitch. dont forget john and paul do this for nothing and i take my hat off to them for everything they do and for sticking by the team. im sure there would be a few clubs interested in them. any 1 agree?

This team will only get better and they have been really unlucky in a number of their games.Nice to see Neil has now altered the above and the subs are right, shame he didn't alter the rest of the his negative report. I agree with you alf, top comments mate, clearly neil still has an extra large chip on his shoulder can't see much chance of him changing that. Kev, hopefully the other clubs that Neil has been asked to go to will take him, cos Tilbury don't want him
but I am sure he will carry on with his negative comments and do his upmost to destroy this club.
Posted by: Northwood Jenson on 1:21pm Tue 22 Jan 08
His report is hardly going to be glowing. You lot were crap.

And with the comments about naming incorrect subs, thats your poxy clubs fault because they screwed up the teamsheets. I should know.
