LEWIS Bentley is to become East Thurrock United’s latest signing after heading the Rocks to victory over Tilbury on Tuesday night.

The forward is expected to complete his move from Braintree Town on Thursday, after he rose highest to head the Rocks into the lead in the 2nd minute, scoring his second goal in three appearances.

John Coventry’s men went onto win their final pre-season game 4-0, before stuff gets serious against Kingstonian on Saturday.

Bentley’s goal came before Tilbury had even managed a proper touch of the ball, setting the tone for the Rocks domination.

Tom Stephen soared up the wing from right back to finish a sweeping Rocks attack, as he jinked inside the Tilbury full-back and fired the ball into the bottom corner for East Thurrock’s second.

Just after half-time, Coventry made wholesale changes, bringing on a number of reserve team players.

That didn’t change the way the Corringham side played though, as they continued to build from the back, passing the ball quickly and moving sharply.

Brian Adeji fired home the Rocks third, rifling a powerful shot past David Marrable in the Tilbury goal, before Reece Hewitt stepped up to bury the fourth goal from the spot, and with it, Tilbury’s hopes of a positive result.

The Dockers have now shipped eight goals in their last two pre-season games after suffering a 4-0 defeat away to Evo-Stik side Banbury on Saturday.

They face a tough test at big-spending Brentwood Town in their first Ryman Division One North game at the weekend.

Speaking after the game, Coventry said: “I thought we played very well.

“In the first half I thought we really were different class. We retained the ball very well, got players forward and our movement was very good.

“Tilbury were very complimentary at the end and acknowledged that they didn’t really get close.

“Sometimes we just do everything at 100mph but that’s something we’re working on.”

On new signing Bentley, Coventry said: “Lewis has been with us throughout pre-season and it was only very recently that I decided I’d sign him. He took his goal very well and is a good addition for us.”

The Rocks are also on the brink of securing the services of Ross Parmenter from fellow Ryman Premier League side Wingate and Finchley.

Coventry described Parmenter as a central midfield playmaker and added that he should be in the squad for Saturday’s game at home to Kingstonian.
