Hullbridge Sports 0, Tilbury 1 East Anglian Cup 3rd Round Tuesday 21st April 2009 Tilbury FC faced Hullbridge Sports away in the 3rd Round of the East Anglian Cup and gave a fine display on Tuesday night. The result didn’t do justice to the performance as the Dockers kept the Essex Senior side in their own half for long periods of the game.
Tilbury without regular first team players, Manlee Brown, Junior Baker, Nathan Philip, Andy Hall and Zubair Haleem took the game to their hosts who put up a spirited response.
First half saw a wave of attacks, Jason Fontaine & Greg Cohen causing Hullbridge havoc down the flanks with Chris Stowe leading the attack with his usual busy trademark display. However, it was Hullbridge that should have opened the scoring in the open minute, but failed to capitalise with a golden opportunity that went begging from close range.
Ex Docker Keeper Bobby Mason needed to be alert to the attacks mid way through the first period and indeed made a few fine saves to keep the score even at the break.
Chris Stowe twisting his ankle makes way for new striker Lee Newton.
Start of the second half and 2 minutes in saw Lee Newton score from close range giving the Dockers a well deserved 1-0 lead.
Jason Fontaine hit the post from a tight angle leaving Bobby Mason rooted to the spot.
Michael Begg combines well with Jamie Wallace which results in Beggs shot going just over the bar.
The Dockers continue to rain down on the Hullbridge goal, Daniel Smith this time the creator sending the ball into the box to Dean Stannard and Stannard then forcing Bobby Mason to make a fine acrobatic save to his right, out for a Dockers corner.
Last remaining minutes and Tilbury needing to stay firm in defence, Joe Keith, Daniel Smith, Rickie Hayles and Courtney Mclean never look like conceding as they contain any Hullbrige threat.
Newly Promoted Match official Mr Stuart Franklin calls time on the game after allowing a few minutes for injury’s – The Dockers now face Royston Town in the Semi Final which is scheduled to be played at Chadfield’s on Thursday 30th April – Kick off at 7:45pm.
