Wingate and Finchley 2, Tilbury 0 Dockers made the long journey to Abraham’s Stadium to face Wingate & Finchley on Saturday — but came away pointless from the encounter.
Tilbury, on the back of a successful midweek semi-final cup win over Billericay Town were also buoyed up as manager Graham Chester finalised the signing of talented front-man Michael Begg from Canvey-based Concord Rangers.
Begg made his debut in place of regular Striker Manlee Brown, who is currently being rested.
Michael Blacks cam,e close early on but his six yard effort was well saved by the Wingate keeper Gavin King.
King called into action a few minutes after Junior Bakers header looked goal-bound. Wingate frontman Leon Nelson came close a couple of times.
The game finally came to life in the 40th minute when the hosts went two up within minutes. Chris Chase took a corner which curled straight in the net.
The second goal in the 45th minute, a freak free kick from the half way line taken by Daniel Nielsen, sees the ball loop over the head of Andy Hall.
After the restart Chester made a few substitutes, Zubair Haleem on for Nathan Philip and Umaru Turay on for Rashid Kamara.
Wingate’s Marc Weatherstone continued to cause problems for the Dockers on the right.
A rare Dockers attack in the 80th saw Jamie Wallace shoot from 22 yard.
