Woking 0, Thurrock 1 Hakan Heyrettin’s Thurrock today sit in their highest ever league placing after displacing hosts Woking for second spot in the table.
The win came courtesy of a fine goal in first-half injury-time by Paul Olima on a day when fans came to pay tribute to long-standing Cards’ official Phil Ledger, who died recently.
Many came a long way to join in the minute’s silence for a man who rightly earned the title of “Mr Woking”.
On the footballing front those present were able to admire the continuing transformation of a Thurrock side who were only saved from relegation at the end of last season due to Team Bath pulling out.
Thurrock may have been under the cosh for long periods in front of a crowd of 1,366 — the division’s second highest attendance of the day.
But they withstood pressure in magnificent fashion from an attack that included former Grays’ front-runner Jamie Slabber, with central defender Rob Swaine, once on Billericay Town’s books, particularly outstanding.
It was another red-letter day for Fleet and, although there would appear to be little chance that they or any of the other challengers will catch runaway leaders Newport for the title and only automatic promotion spot, it would take a brave man to bet against the Ship Lane side making the play-offs.
They continue their bid to play non-league football at the highest level next Saturday with a home game against St Albans.
