Fleet draw sees promotion hope alive

Welling United 2, Thurrock 2 MATT Bodkin was the late goal star as Fleet maintained their promotion challenge with a battling point at Welling.

With 13 minutes to go Bodkin, playing against his former club, robbed Graeme Andrews and fired low inside Charlie Mitten’s right-hand post to see the visitors filling the final play-off spot.

Enjoying the better of the opening 45 minutes, Thurrock took a 23rd-minute lead when David Bryant’s strong run was ended by a mis-timed challenge from Andrews with Leon McKenzie sending Mitten the wrong way with the resultant penalty.

The hosts got on terms two minutes before half-time when Jamie Day’s corner was only half-cleared and Andy Pugh’s shot was deflected home by Tom Whitnell.

Welling looked like heading for a home win when Sam Cutler fired home his first goal for the club from 15 yards after 58 minutes.

Two minutes before their equaliser, Thurrock felt that they were denied another spot-kick and manager Hakan Hayrettin was so incensed he was sent from the dugout by the referee.

But Welling also had their own penalty claim snubbed late on after it appeared that Michael Bakare was brought down.

Thurrock will look to step-up their play-off bid next Saturday when Maidenhead United visit Ship Lane.
